Tributes to Peter Collins

Please see the ECF Forum tributes here

This is a selection of the tributes collected by David Fone, Lichfield Chess Club player and Secretary of the Wolverhampton and District Chess League.

Gary Haime: That is very sad news indeed - thanks for letting me know.He will be greatly missed, always a dutiful Captain and helpful mentor, as well as being an extremely strong opponent!

Graham Lamb:  Sad news about Peter, thanks for letting me know. He was a great servant to the club

Also condolences from DCA  Andrew Toothill, Dave Williams and John Hoddy who all say how polite and courteous Peter was.

I was very sad to hear that Peter has passed away. In my Kynoch days we were opposing captains and often played against each other. All three results always happened between us and Peter was the epitome of a perfect sportsman.

Yours sincerely Keith Ingram

Sad news, Peter passed away last week in a care home after a long illness. Many of you may know that he was Chairman of Lichfield club for many years, until he was seriously ill about 5years’ ago. He was also captain of our Birmingham league Division1 team, again a very long stint. Even after that his appetite for chess was undiminished and I think 3 or 4 seasons ago he played more league matches than any other club member, many of them for me in B&L B team. I suspect that he knew then that his chess career was coming to an end and wanted to keep his mind as active as possible. He was also a keen tennis player and I think had other sporting interests but chess was always paramount. He was highly respected throughout the local chess community and is very sadly missed.

That's very sad news.  Thanks for letting me know.

 Best wishes,

Tim Lane Birmingham League Secretary

Really sad news. Peter has been a very good supportive important member of our club. I have known him since he joined Lichfield and he always upheld our club to the highest standards in being President,  First team captain and player. He will be very sadly missed by Carol, his children and many friends . He was a Deputy Head teacher at Burntwood

and was a very honourable, hard working, enthusiastic gentleman.

I send my heartfelt condolences to all.

God bless Peter. RIP

 Very Kind Regards Mike Hoare

Hi David, I did not know Peter well, but from your description and a checking of the ECF rating database he did play a lot of chess with considerable success. I have put a short tribute on the Staffordshire Chess association website

hHe appears to be "one of those men whose like we will never see again" Peter Evans

Very sad news. I didn’t know Peter well, but know he was an incredible presence and contributor in the growth and longevity of the club. Rishard Anderson

Very sad news, a stalwart of the club, captained the first team to successes in both Birmingham and Wolverhampton Leagues added to that he was club chairman for a significant number of years his contribution to Lichfield chess was immense. May he rest in peace. John Keaveney

Hi David,

Sorry to hear the news about Peter.

He was the captain. Of the First Team for many years and helped the club to flourish as it still does today. Please let me know if there is going to be a floral tribute from the Club, or anything else which is appropriate.

Arthur Hall

He was a true gentleman and a wonderful human being.  And, yes, a superlative Rook and Pawn Endgame master!

I am sure that he will be commemorated at our AGM in May too and beforehand.   Do feel free to send in any memories in the meantime if you would like to.

Yours

Stephen Smithson (Lichfield Secretary)

Thanks David and very sorry to hear this sad news.

A very strong player and true gentleman.

Cheers John Fahy (Warley Quinbourne)

Hi David,

Sending my best to Carol and the family,

Adam Routledge (Lichfield Chess Club)

I have been saddened by Peter's decline and eventual death. He was not only a good chess player, but has been such a reliable organiser of chess in Lichfield. A good friend to so many of us.
